As my Spring semester at Newhouse in Syracuse is starting to really kick into full swing, my progress in my semester long project for my video class is starting to show. So, what is my semester long project?
For the next few months, I will be working on a "campaign" revolving around the topic of pregnancy, abortion and adoption. However, my main focus will be around pregnancy and abortion. It is a hot topic that is not only controversial but I believe that it is not talked about as much as it should be.
Late last year, the issue gained a lot of media attention after the government announced that it will no longer be funding Planned Parenthood. This sparked a Twitter campaign, #ShoutYourAbortion, to shout back at the news. Not only did the campaign "shout back" but more women opened up about their abortions - some of which were even secret. Some would say that there is a stigma about abortion and even women's choices.
Throughout my campaign, I will remain neutral. I certainly have my own views and beliefs on the issue but for the sake of my campaign and project, I will be neither pro-choice nor pro-life. Instead, I want to simply bring more attention to the issue and let people decide for themselves. There are many people who already have their own opinions about the topic but my goal with this campaign is more than that. I want people, no matter which side they are on, to simply respect women's choices and what they do with their bodies. There are many other factors that come into play but that is a separate discussion. I would like for people, both men and women, to respect one another and their choices with a disregard to their own beliefs.
In addition, I hope to open a medium for women to speak freely and openly about their experiences and women who are about to go through a similar experience.
For this project, I will be directing, producing and editing an 8-10 minute fiction film about the pregnancy, abortion and adoption. I will continue to post updates and sneak peeks as I progress with the project.
